Frequently asked questions

How long is Karnischer Höhenweg and how many days?+
The route measures roughly 156 km along the main ridge of the Carnian Alps and you gain about 8500 meters of elevation. Depending on fitness and stage length, it takes 8 to 11 days. The classic route goes west to east, starting from Sillian.
How demanding is Karnischer Höhenweg?+
Difficulty: hard. You'll face exposed ridges, scree passes, snow into mid-summer in the western section, and short rope-secured sections. You need sure-footedness, a firm head, and experience with high-altitude terrain. This isn't for beginners.
Why is the trail called Peace Trail (Friedensweg)?+
The Carnian Alps ridge was a front between Austro-Hungary and Italy from 1915 to 1917. After the war, old military paths and trails were developed into a long-distance route, which has been led since the 1970s as the Friedensweg — the Peace Trail — as both a memorial and a reconciliation between the two sides.
Which huts are on the route?+
Including Sillianer Hütte (2447 m), Obstansersee-Hütte, Filmoor-Standschützen-Hütte (2350 m), Porze-Hütte, Hochweißstein-Haus, Wolayersee-Hütte (1960 m), and Zollnersee-Hütte. Most sit high on the ridge, often above 2000 m.
How do I book hut accommodation?+
The huts fall under the Alpenverein. Operators ask for booking at least a week ahead; some huts have online booking, others just need a phone call. During peak season, huts fill; don't rely on finding a bed on the spot. Alpenverein membership lowers the nightly rate.
When is the best season for Karnischer Höhenweg?+
From mid-July through late September, depending on current snow. Before that, snow lingers in the passes and is dangerous; later, the first snowfall arrives and huts close. Outside this window, the ridge is inaccessible and without shelter.
Where does the route start and end?+
Classically you start in Sillian in East Tyrol and travel along the border ridge eastward. In the data here, the route ends at Arnbach; the full long-distance variant continues via Plöckenpass and Nassfeld further east into Carinthia.
Are there still WWI remains visible?+
Yes, and it's one of the main reasons people come here. Along the ridge lie over hundred-year-old trenches, barbed wire, carved positions, and caves. At Wolayersee stands a war memorial, and traces of fighting remain around the lake.
What is Filmoor-Standschützen-Hütte?+
A small, rustic hut at 2350 m, one of the highest on the route. Built in 1977, it's named after the Standschützen — the home guard that fought here on the ridge during the war.
What about the peak Monte Coglians — is it visible from the route?+
Monte Coglians, in German Hohe Warte, at 2780 m is the highest peak of the Carnian Alps and dominates the ridge. On one of the border passes hangs the Peace Bell (Friedensglocke), which rings across both sides of the former front.
Is Karnischer Höhenweg a via ferrata?+
No, not an equipped path in the true sense. There are only short rope-secured sections with cables and ladders, which don't require via ferrata gear or specialized equipment. The main demands are high-altitude: sure footedness and tolerance for exposure.
Can you swim at Wolayersee?+
Yes, if you're hardy. Wolayersee is a glacier lake directly below the hut of the same name (1960 m), and in summer the hardy can swim in it. But the water is genuinely cold — it's a high-altitude glacier lake in a bowl.
