One night in 1970 a single hut held 681 people. Not a hotel — a mountain hut at two thousand meters. That's Rappenseehütte, the largest hut in all of the German Alpenverein, and this three-day ridge circuit through the Allgäu Alps gets you there the back way.
Rappensee-Hüttentour isn't a classic one-route-from-A-to-B affair. It's a circuit along the Allgäu main ridge (Allgäuer Hauptkamm) above Oberstdorf: 35 km, around 2,800 m of climbing, three days and three huts, each at two thousand meters. And crucially — one critical junction where you decide whether to go over the iron or under with the flowers.
Start is high, not low. The Fellhornbahn cable car drops you high and day one is more warm-up: 2.5 to 3 hours to Fiderepasshütte (2,067 m), which sits right under the rock ridge Schafalpenköpfe on the German-Austrian border. A leg that's doable even on feet not yet stretched.
Day two is what you came for. The route to Mindelheimer Hütte (2,058 m) crosses three Schafalpenköpfe summits — and you choose. Either the Mindelheimer Klettersteig: the Allgäu's oldest via ferrata, built by the Mindelheim section 1973–1975 and outfitted with 71 steel cables, 184 steps and 121 pegs. Its famous piece is a ladder bridge (Leiterbrücke) that spans a deep crack between towers — air beneath your feet, panorama all around including Gottesackerplateau in Kleinwalsertal. Difficulty B/C, long, but internationally moderate-tough. Anyone without gear or a head for exposure takes the Krumbacher Höhenweg instead: the easiest link below the via ferrata, panoramic, in summer carpeted with wildflowers. Same views, less adrenaline.
Day three brings you to the main attraction. Rappenseehütte stands at 2,091 m since 1885, when the Allgäu-Kempten section built it as one of the area's very first huts. Today with 304 beds it's the largest of all 321 DAV huts — a colossus handling around 15,000 bed-nights yearly. Above it tower Hohes Licht (2,651 m) and Biberkopf (2,599 m); below lie the alpine lakes Kleiner and Großer Rappensee, which give the hut its name. From here you descend via Eselsweg across Rappenalpe back down to Birgsau.
Who's it for? For fit hikers with a sure step and head for heights. Terrain is high-alpine, above forest, and even the "easy" variant wants solid boots and calm in exposure. Anyone going full via ferrata needs the kit, helmet and experience — the Mindelheimer Klettersteig isn't a first-timer route. Without that, take Krumbacher Höhenweg and keep your views.
When to go? Season is short and clear: huts run roughly mid-June to mid-October; outside that it's closed and snow claims the ridge. Best are July and August, when the via ferrata is dry and Krumbacher Höhenweg blooms.
How to book? The huts belong to the German Alpenverein and you sleep via the Alpenverein reservation system — online, in advance, especially Rappenseehütte fills in high season. Membership in Alpenverein (or Austrian ÖAV or Czech partner) cuts hut prices and gives priority. Book all three nights together so the circuit doesn't fall apart.
