Day 1 · traverse to Fiderepasshütte
↔ 8.2 km↑ 1136 m↓ 9 m◷ 4–5 h

Fiderepasshütte (2,067 m) sits right under the Schafalpenköpfe rock ridge on the German-Austrian border. Just 2.5 to 3 hours from the Fellhornbahn cable car, so day one is a warm-up with Rappenalpen panorama.

Day 2 · traverse to Mindelheimer Hütte
↔ 5.1 km↑ 351 m↓ 393 m◷ 2–3 h

Critical stage and crucial choice: over three Schafalpenköpfe either via Mindelheimer Klettersteig (oldest Allgäu via ferrata, 1973–75, with ladder bridge over crevasse) or below it on the easy Krumbacher Höhenweg. Both end at Mindelheimer Hütte (2,058 m).

Day 3 · traverse to Rappenseehütte
↔ 8.7 km↑ 855 m↓ 786 m◷ 5–6 h

Goal is Rappenseehütte (2,091 m) from 1885 — with 304 beds the largest hut in all the German Alpenverein, above it Hohes Licht (2,651 m) and lakes Kleiner and Großer Rappensee. Descent via Eselsweg across Rappenalpe to Birgsau.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Rappensee Circuit and how many days?+
The circuit measures roughly 35 km with approximately 2,800 m of climbing and goes in three days with two hut nights. Each day has one longer stage between huts at two thousand meters.
How difficult is the route and who's it for?+
Moderate difficulty, but it's high-alpine terrain above forest. Takes good fitness, sure footing and comfort with heights. For the via ferrata variant you need experience and gear; see below.
Do I have to do the Mindelheimer Klettersteig or can I skip it?+
No obligation. Day two gives you the choice: either Mindelheimer Klettersteig over the three Schafalpenköpfe (via ferrata B/C, gear required), or the easier Krumbacher Höhenweg below. Both end at Mindelheimer Hütte with great views.
What do I need for the Mindelheimer Klettersteig?+
Full via ferrata kit (harness, fall damper, two loops with carabiners), climbing helmet, solid boots and crucially experience with exposure. It's the Allgäu's oldest and longest via ferrata, not a beginner route. Unsure? Take Krumbacher Höhenweg.
Which huts do you sleep at?+
Fiderepasshütte (2,067 m), Mindelheimer Hütte (2,058 m) and Rappenseehütte (2,091 m) depending on circuit variant. Rappenseehütte is the star — the largest DAV hut.
What makes Rappenseehütte so special?+
With 304 beds it's the largest of 321 German Alpenverein huts. Standing since 1885, it handles around 15,000 bed-nights yearly and holds the record of 681 guests in a single night (September 19, 1970).
When is best time for this route?+
Season is brief: huts run roughly mid-June to mid-October. Most reliable is July and August when the via ferrata is dry and Krumbacher Höhenweg flowers.
How do I book hut stays?+
The huts belong to the German Alpenverein and you book ahead online via the Alpenverein system. Rappenseehütte especially fills in high season, so reserve all nights at once.
Is Alpenverein membership worth it?+
Yes. DAV members (and partners including Austrian ÖAV) get significantly cheaper beds and booking priority. On a three-day trek membership often pays for itself.
Where does the route start and end?+
It's a circuit in the region above Oberstdorf in the Allgäu Alps; the cable car Fellhornbahn eases access to height, and descent goes to Birgsau. Being a circuit you return near your start.
How high does the route go and what's the terrain?+
You move mainly between 2,000 and 2,100 m above forest on rocky ridges and panoramic traverses of the Allgäu main ridge. Hohes Licht (2,651 m) and Biberkopf (2,599 m) tower above.
Will I see lakes or glaciers from the route?+
No glaciers in the Allgäu — ridges are rocky and grassy. But beneath Rappenseehütte lie alpine lakes Kleiner and Großer Rappensee, which name the hut and entire circuit.
