Frequently asked questions

How many days does the Watzmann Circuit take?+
Classically four days with three nights at huts (Watzmannhaus, Wimbachgrieshütte, Kärlingerhaus). Fit hikers can squeeze it to three days, but an extra day beats a rushed march.
How long is Watzmann-Umrundung and how much elevation?+
The circuit measures roughly 53 kilometers and you climb nearly 4,000 meters of elevation. It's not a sprint — it's an endurance haul around the entire Watzmann massif.
How difficult is the route? Can I manage it?+
Moderate difficulty. You don't need climbing skills or via ferrata gear, but you must carry a multi-day pack, handle long daily stages and have a sure step in exposed ground — mainly above the Steinernes Meer and in Saugasse switchbacks.
Is there a secured via ferrata on the route?+
No. Watzmann-Umrundung follows marked alpine trails without secured via ferrata. A few spots are exposed though, so good head for height and solid boots are mandatory.
Which huts are on the route and where do you sleep?+
Three Alpenverein huts: Watzmannhaus (1,930 m) after day one, Wimbachgrieshütte (1,327 m) after day two and Kärlingerhaus (1,631 m) above lake Funtensee after day three. Day four ends at St. Bartholomä on Königssee shore.
How do I book hut stays?+
Watzmannhaus, Wimbachgrieshütte and Kärlingerhaus are Alpenverein huts — book beds in advance online through the relevant section's booking system. In summer and weekends book well ahead, spots fill quickly.
When is the best season?+
Roughly June through September or October while huts are open and the karstic plateau Steinernes Meer has no snow. Outside season huts are closed and high sections dangerous.
Where does the route start and finish?+
Starts in Schönau am Königssee and ends at the pilgrimage church St. Bartholomä on the western shore of Königssee. From there you return by quiet electric boat to Schönau, nicely closing the circuit.
Why is lake Funtensee so famous?+
Funtensee is Germany's coldest spot. On December 24, 2001 they measured −45.9 °C here — still the lowest temperature in German history. Cold air settles in the enclosed stone bowl, so Kärlingerhaus a few meters higher stays twenty degrees warmer.
What is Wimbachgries?+
One of the Alps' largest scree streams — roughly ten kilometers of crushed stone river, sometimes three hundred meters wide, essentially bare of vegetation and still slowly moving. Looks like a desert trapped between Watzmann and Hochkalter.
Will I see the Watzmann-Ostwand?+
Yes, already day one from Watzmannhaus. The Watzmann's eastern wall drops 1,800 meters from Königssee's surface to summit and is the highest wall in the Eastern Alps — one of climbing's most feared places.
How do I get to the start in Schönau?+
Schönau am Königssee is a classic access point to lake Königssee in Berchtesgaden, reachable by car or bus. From there ascends the trail to the first hut Watzmannhaus.
