Frequently asked questions

Why is the route called Nepali Highway?+
After the Nepali staff at both huts. Kitchen assistants from Sidelenhütte and Albert-Heim-Hütte forged the fastest link across the boulder slope so they could visit each other between shifts. Hence "Nepali highway".
How long is the Nepali Highway itself and how demanding?+
The crossing between Sidelenhütte and Albert-Heim-Hütte takes roughly 2 hours, just +170 and −330 m. Markings are blue-white-blue and difficulty is T3+ (challenging mountain hiking) by the SAC scale.
Are there secured sections or via ferrata?+
No classic via ferrata, but two short passages are secured by fixed rope (non-exposed) and twice you cross longer boulder fields. A sure step is mandatory.
How many days should I plan?+
The highway itself is a two-hour affair. We make it a three-day granite pilgrimage through the Furka area with three stops — Sidelenhütte, Albert-Heim-Hütte and descent to Urschner Höhenweg.
Which huts are on the route?+
Sidelenhütte (2,708 m) and Albert-Heim-Hütte SAC (2,542 m). Both lie in the Furka granite region and belong to the Swiss Alpine Club.
When is the best time for Nepali Highway?+
Albert-Heim-Hütte's season runs mid-June to mid-October. Most reliable is July through September — June often has firn fields and an ice axe comes in handy.
How do I book hut nights?+
Both huts are SAC (Swiss Alpine Club, equivalent to Alpenverein) and book ahead online via the SAC portal. In high season and weekends reservation is essential; SAC/Alpenverein members pay less for beds.
What will I see on the route?+
Specifically: Chli Bielenhorn, Tiefengletscher, the granite Galenstock massif and alpine lake Seelein. Albert-Heim-Hütte sits directly beneath Tiefengletscher and in Galenstock's sights.
Is this route suitable for families with children?+
For older children with scree-field experience yes. Because of fixed rope and boulder terrain (T3+), it's not for complete beginners or small children.
Where does the route start and end?+
In our three-day version it starts at Sidelenhütte and ends at Albert-Heim-Hütte, or via descent to Urschner Höhenweg above the Urseren valley. Access to the huts is usually from Furka Pass (2,466 m) or from Tiefenbach.
Who was Albert-Heim-Hütte named after?+
After geologist and glaciologist Albert Heim, honorary member of SAC. The hut was founded in 1918 at his initiative and he personally chose the spot — on a rock spur beneath Galenstock.
Is there climbing around the huts?+
Yes. Both Sidelenhütte and Albert-Heim-Hütte sit in one of Switzerland's best granite climbing regions around Furka. Crystal rock routes for experienced climbers surround the huts.
